Leave it to the Spaniard’s to come up with an approach like this. This is a video that Jami sent me and I felt obligated to share this with everyone that climbs. Originally built in 1901, this walkway now serves as an aproach to makinodromo, the famous climbing sector of El Chorro. Enjoy.

So after a slow summer of climbing last year, I have finally “laced” up my climbing shoes five times already and have had some great outings so far this spring. Hopefully, I’m on the right road to redemption. I’ve been climbing at Exit 38 in Seattle, and in both Paradise and Gallatin Valleys so far this year. The rock has been excellent and for the most part I’ve shaken off the old rust. My most recent adventure was the classic route in the Gallatin Valley called “Spare Rib.” I eyed this a few summers ago when I was climbing the Standard Route up Gallatin tower. It’s a wonderfully prominent and fairly exposed two pitch 5.8 that’s about a 45 minute walk from the car. It took us two trips to actually climb it in its entirety, as we got blown off the first time by some 50mph winds. It is a super route that eats gear, and it has a little of everything to keep you entertained. If you are in the area and looking for something to climb look no further than Spare Rib. You can find out everything you need to know in the Montana Climbing Guide.
If you are interested I gathered a few of the best photos from the friends I was with and put them up in our gallery for your viewing pleasure. You can check them out here: Spare Rib
Jami, Whitney, Claire, Nic and I all ventured up Paradise Valley for some climbing in Mill Creek today. Given the fact that we were new to the area, we decided to spend some time at Warm Up Wall making our way up the 5.easy routes. They did not disappoint! Kevin’s guide assisted us in finding the wall and we all had a perfectly enjoyable time scampering up the clean rock. Everything we spent time on was varied, interesting and very fun to climb. The weather was great until a rain cloud decided to unload on us, and then it was time to head home. If you want to check out the visual goodies, click on the picture to the left and enjoy the photos!
For all you Montana rock climbers out there, Kevin Hutchinson has released a new climbing guide to Paradise Valley. Given the fact that there are no recent or comprehensive guides at all for the Bozeman area this is a welcome addition to my library. I got the opportunity to meet Kevin a few weeks back and he is an extremely nice guy and I know he has worked very hard putting this guide together. He has been compiling this guide for more than 10 years, and he personally established a vast majority of the routes you will find contained within. He has done a great job, with full route descriptions, pictures, and even a little comedy sprinkled in for good measure. I really like some of the great route names Kevin chooses. Some of my personal favorites are from the Training Ground area with route names like “Sebulba”, “Lando’s”, and “You Seek Yoda.” Anyone that themes an entire area using Star Wars as inspiration is okay in my book!
You can find a copy locally here in Bozeman, and I know they have them over at Barrel Mountaineering. Please support Kevin and his family by purchasing a copy for your next Montana climbing outing!
